CHS named District Academic Champions

The Calhoun High School Academic UIL team has been named District Academic Champions, after earning seven first place team awards, nine first place individual awards and more total points than the nine other schools competing at a district-level meet on March 30 at Calhoun High School, in Port Lavaca.

2019 District Academic UIL Competition highlights:

  • Calhoun took first place team in Accounting, with Anna Sachtleben placing first individually.
  • Calhoun won first place team in Calculator Apps with Kary Xu placing first individually. Kelly Xu placed second and Anthony Liu placed third.
  • Calhoun won first place team in Computer Apps with DelWe Htoo placing first individually. LawRa Moo placed second.
  • Calhoun earned first place team in Computer Science with Daniel Beaver and Jessica Zhang tying for first place individually. Katherine Wang placed third.
  • Calhoun received first place team in Mathematics with Kary Xu placing first individually. Jessica Zhang placed second, and Kelly Xu placed third.
  • Calhoun took first place team in Number Sense with Jessica Zhang placing first individually. Kary Xu placed third.
  • Calhoun won first place team in Spelling with Sergio Morales placing first individually. Caleb Huang placed second.
  • In Prose, Angela Webb placed first and Irish Valdez placed third individually.
  • In Ready Writing, Crystal Kwi placed first, GG Cheng placed second, and Sajni Desai placed third individually.
  • In Science, Jessica Zhang placed third individually and won the overall top Physics Award
  • In Social Studies, Hannah Sun placed second individually.

All first place teams and first – third place individuals will advance to the Regional Academic UIL Competition on April 12 at UTSA in San Antonio.

Calhoun High School has developed and maintained a strong academic program, over the past many years, thanks to the leadership and commitment from both our student participants and our teachers who volunteer as Academic UIL team coaches.

This year marks Calhoun High School’s fifth, consecutive year to have earned a District Academic Championship. Calhoun has proudly-claimed the District Academic Championship at least 12 out of the past 13 years.
