Calhoun County ISD School Board recognized
Posted on 01/07/2021

During School Board Recognition Month, the Calhoun County ISD administration would like to take a moment to honor a very special group of volunteers for their commitment to public education, particularly during these unique and unprecedented times.

The Calhoun County ISD School Board provides strong and consistent leadership to the district’s more than 600 employees and 3600 students. School board members serve in a volunteer capacity, without payment, and spend countless hours reviewing information to make the best possible decisions for the future success of our schools. It is a critically important role that requires an election and mandated training. It is an important responsibility.

During the pandemic of 2020, our trustees came through when we needed them most, protecting our most vulnerable, while ensuring that academic progress could continue for all students.

Thanks to a supportive school board and community, Calhoun County ISD is proud to share the following highlights from 2020:

  • The development and implementation of a non-traditional instructional plan that accommodated health and safety guidance from the state, including remote learning.
  • The procurement and distribution of technology, instructional materials and school supplies.
  • The continuation of employee wages and benefits during the state-mandated school facility closure.
  • Support of employee incentives, including a raise, a stipend, and the creation of an additional step in the salary schedule to reward employees with the most years of service.
  • Free, rapid and non-invasive COVID-19 testing for employees and eligible students.
  • Free school meals and curbside meal service.
  • Hosted in-person graduation ceremonies (that were also streamed) for 211 Calhoun High School students and 46 Hope High School students.
  • Housing for new employees through a partnership with Formosa Plastics.

Additionally, the Calhoun County ISD School Board has recognized that our families have different needs and opinions regarding local public health conditions, which is why the district offered families a choice between two instructional formats this school year -- Face-to-Face Instruction at school, or Virtual Instruction at home. One of the most important accomplishments of the first semester is that the district was able to keep both instructional formats open and active.

Also, on top of everything else, the Calhoun County ISD School Board was recently selected as the Regional Outstanding School Board of the Year.

Please join in celebrating School Board Recognition Month throughout the month of January. Take a moment to say thank you for the work school board members are doing on your behalf. Sincere appreciation is extended to the following Calhoun County ISD School Board members: Bill Harvey, President; John Foester, Secretary; Dominic Robles; Rene Flores; Karen Caraway; and David Gaskamp.
