Calhoun High School Attendance Policy - Reminder

Posted Date: 10/20/26 (10:58 AM)

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At Calhoun High School, we know that consistent attendance is essential to student success. Our goal for attendance this school year is to have every student, in every class, every day. In accordance with Texas law, students must be in attendance at least 90% of the time to receive grade level credit. All absences, excused and unexcused, are included in the 90% calculation. This rule applies to each class, even if the student has passing grades.

Excused/Unexcused Absences
  • District policy allows parent notes to excuse up to 8 days per semester.
  • Parent notes must be submitted within three days of the student returning to school.
  • A doctor’s note is required to excuse four or more consecutive absences.
  • If a student attends part of a school day and provides a doctor’s note for that day, they will be counted present.
Make-Up Opportunities- Students can recover hours through after-school sessions or Saturday school. Key details include:
  • Hour-for-hour make-up requirement
  • No cell phones permitted during sessions
  • Students must bring their own lunch (no deliveries)
  • Dress code enforced
  • Students will be given academic assignments to complete
  • Make-up hours cannot be completed during late-in or early-out periods
  • 5 make-up sessions will be provided for fall hours beginning in October
    • October 25, 2026
    • November 7, 2026
    • November 14, 2026
    • December 5, 2026
    • January 22, 2027
  • January 28, 2027 will be the final day to make-up hours for the fall semester
  • 6 make-up sessions will be provided for spring semester hours beginning in February.
  • May 13, 2027 will be the final day to make-up hours for spring semester hours.
Failure to Complete Make-Up Hours- If students do not complete required make-up time, they may lose access to:
  • Course credit (impacting graduation eligibility)
  • Participation in extracurricular activities (sports, band, clubs, etc.)
  • Field trips and class events
  • Exam exemptions
  • VOE (Verification of Enrollment) for driver’s licenses
  • School dances, prom, and other student events
  • The privilege of walking the stage at graduation
We appreciate your support in reinforcing the importance of daily attendance. By working together, we can ensure every student is set up for success both in the classroom and beyond.

Sincerely,

Leather McCall
